Okay, so I feel pretty silly right now.

I had all this trouble trying to fix the Mac. Programs were quitting on me, so I went to the Apple Support site last night to see what it could be. I follow the directions (which included setting up a new Admin account), do all the stuff that it says to do, and whaddaya know? I can't get back into my original account. Password won't work. I do my best finagling (including purposefully misspelling the pw, trying to change it, etc.) -- all to no avail.

I call tech support this morning. The guy has me reboot the computer, and the damn thing logs into my original account automatically.

*sigh*

In my days as a PC user I was the one calling tech support only when nothing else worked. Steve (the head tech guy at ASU) got to know me pretty well -- but anytime I called him, he knew it wasn't the simple "is it plugged in" type of solution.

So now, I know the standard Windows fix works on Macs too. Go figure.
