Happy Fourth!

Well, in my German exile I don't get the holiday off from classes *smirk* but there will be festivities tonight, anyway, thanks to the other Americans in my building. Kudos to Tracey for throwing the party!
This last weekend was great. It started early, with Katie's birthday party on Thursday night. We had lasagne, salad, wine and for dessert, toffee pie, courtesy of Lyndsey. It was rich, heavenly and downright deadly. :) Lynds and Anders were in attendance, as well as Ragnar, Bobby and myself. :) We had an unexpected (drunken) visitor around 12:30 who provided short entertainment, but whose attentions also closed the party down. *sigh* I still didn't go to sleep until 2, since I stayed up chatting with the birthday girl until about 1 or 1:30.
The next day Dory and I departed for an SCA event in Euskirchen, which is close to Bonn. [more info about the SCA underhttp://www.sca.org/ ] We stopped in Heidelberg to pick up Jenice, and away we went. We got in later than expected, but still didn't miss the castle battles. I managed to get a lot of photos, despite languishing batteries in my camera. I took a few more photos the next day, but I mostly just relaxed and enjoyed myself after the castle battles were over on Friday. That night there was a bardic competition, and I participated and tied for first! The other girl who sang had a completely different style than I did, which is what made the decision so difficult that we conceded to share the win. :) I stayed up after that, sitting around the fire and singing along to songs that Freeman played on his guitar, with Arnulf playing drums or recorder along. At quite a late hour I was walked 'home' to my tent by Ragnir, a kind young man with a flashlight. It was refreshing not to trip over the minefield of guy ropes between the campfire and my tent. :)
Saturday started early and slowly, with a relaxed breakfast with members of John and Honor's household. I attended dance classes in the morning, and a class about headdresses in the 11th to 14th centuries after lunch and a nap. The headdresses class was not just an academic presentation, but a hands-on workshop: Ezebella, who taught the class, had all kinds of veils and such for us to try on. It was great fun, and I ended up getting a veil and barbette to wear. I got a lot of complements on them. I had been trying to find a style of head wear to go with my late 13th-early 14th century garb for quite some time, so I was quite pleased with it myself.
Saturday night brought court (where I was inducted into the Popular Company of Sojourners, which just means that I have lived in this kingdom of the SCA and am now moving away). So many people came up and said that they would miss me, and that my talents would be missed as well. There are such wonderful people here, to say such things. :)
After court was feast, which in true SCA style was quite late, starting around 9:30 p.m. The food was delicious, and there were quite a few 'incidents' (which were largely just schtick) for our entertainment. I sang for the king and queen, as a thank-you for the rich welcome they had given me. I ended up sitting with Arnulf afterward, and sang/drummed along to his music whenever he would play. I got up for a walk after a while, and ran into a group of friends, including Ragnir and Aglamar. I stood/sat around and chatted with Ragnir and the others until very late, when Ragnir and I were the only ones left. Stayed up talking with him until it was nearly daylight, and finally went to bed.
Sunday was a day for packing up and farewells. The farewells took much longer than the packing up! I exchanged email addresses with several people, including Ezebella, Ragnir and a fellow whose SCA name escapes me, but whose real name is Christian. I had a lot of people who sought me out for goodbyes too, which was gratifying... needless to say I felt the love. ;)
Once we were packed up, Dory, Jenice and I headed out, stopping at a little fruit stand in Euskirchen for fresh cherries to take home, and we hit the road. We stopped in Mannheim to fuel up on base, and had Popeye's chicken and biscuits for lunch. *grin* Part of the highway between Mannheim and Heidelberg was closed for repairs, and we took the scenic route, where we hit some heavy traffic. I read from Good Omens for entertainment. We dropped Jenice off in Heidelberg, and met her mom and two nieces who are here visiting from Texas. Dory and I hit the road again, this time getting a little traffic on the Autobahn, which allowed me to read more from Good Omens. We got home in about 6 hours or so, although it may have been longer. I thought we left around 12, but it may have been closer to 11. In any case, I was in my room with all my stuff unloaded by 6 p.m. I stayed up another three hours, checking email and writing it, and chatting with Kit and Katie.
Sleep came to me quickly, even in the evening light of 9 p.m. *grin* I woke up at 7, feeling sleepy but mostly refreshed, and here I am. I have quite a bit to accomplish today, and with any luck I will. Okay, off to it then!
